HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Thirteen practices have come and gone for Southern Miss football as it wrapped up another fall camp day on Friday morning on Carlisle-Faulkner Field at M.M. Roberts Stadium.
"It was a beautiful day, we thank the Good Lord for that," said head coach Will Hall. "We got a lot of great work with punt block today and punt return and then also pooch punt situations, which we've really, really made a point of emphasis over the offseason to get better at that. We were really good at it two years ago and we're getting back to that and understanding that situation and the way it affects our whole ability to win."
With temperatures expected to reach 100 degrees mid-day in Hattiesburg, the Golden Eagles went just over two hours in shells this morning to beat the heat. With a dose of hard-hitting team periods, Southern Miss also mixed in special teams work as Hall alluded to during his daily press availability.
Southern Miss Athletics and the Southern Miss Alumni Association will host Fanfest tomorrow as the Golden Eagles are scheduled to have a scrimmage at The Rock. Following Saturday's practice, the Golden Eagles will only have two practices left in their fall camp schedule.
The South Endzone and Giannini Touchdown Terrace gates will open at 7 a.m. on Saturday. The Union Complex will also be open to the public for fans to have access to air conditioning and restrooms. Fanfest will feature a view of practice, player interaction, and a short message from Coach Hall.
"I'm excited about tomorrow, excited about Fanfest," Hall said. "I hope everybody will come see us and hope that everybody that comes has joined the Collective or will join the Collective before they leave. It's only $17 a month to help push our program into the next tier. A lot of fans don't realize, we are closer to the lower tier, functioning like lower tier Big 10 and SEC and ACC and Big XII teams, we're closer to them than those lower tier SEC and Big 10 teams are to the upper tier of their league. We're right there. We've just got to keep pushing with our Collective and join it."
Fanfest is free to attend, and concessions will be available for purchase. Pending weather conditions, fun jumps and access to the football field will be available.
Southern Miss opens the season Saturday, Aug. 31, at Kentucky in a 6:45 p.m. CT contest. The game will be broadcast on the SEC Network and can be heard on an affiliate of the Southern Miss Sports Network.
