HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss football team continued preparations for the 2024 season Tuesday as they went through practice No. 11 of fall camp in Carlisle-Faulkner Field at M.M. Roberts Stadium.
The Golden Eagles went over two hours in shells and produced a solid, hard-hitting practice.
"We got a lot of great situational work today with a lot of live tackling was good to see," said Southern Miss fourth-year coach Will Hall. "There was some good back-and-forth. We did a little get back on track period where it's second-and-long for the offense and then playing whether it goes third down or tempo first.
"It was chaotic for both sides, which is good. We need that chaos to simulate that from a sideline of transitioning to third
down and tempo and all that."
The team also enjoyed some more solid back-and-fourth in its high red zone portion of the workout.
"The offense had two excellent third-down plays for touchdowns," said Hall. "Ti Mims hit a screen right there and then Ethan [Crawford] did a great job, which probably was Ethan's best six-play rack of camp in row right there in that high red."
The team then went into a low red situational part of the practice and another quarterback was praised for his work during that section of the practice.
"Tate [Rodemaker] had a great, great thread the needle touchdown pass to Kyirin Heath versus a tough coverage that he completed it against," said Hall. "Then the defense responded. We had two, two-point plays at the end and the defense was able to stop both.
"All-in-all, it's going to be some good tape to watch from a situational standpoint. We worked a ton of kicking game today as we continue to get better with that. We'll be back in shells tomorrow and Friday and we'll scrimmage again on Saturday."
Southern Miss opens the season Saturday, Aug. 31, at Kentucky in a 6:45 p.m. CT contest. The game will be broadcast on the SEC Network and can be heard on an affiliate of the Southern Miss Sports Network.
