SAN MARCOS, Texas-Southern Miss fought back from an early deficit against James Madison in the opening round of the Sun Belt Championship, but the Dukes found the advantage it needed with a five-run outing in the first inning to win 6-2 and advance in the tournament.
James Madison fired out of the gate with five runs on one hit and four walks in the first inning. With the bases loaded, Lexi Rogers scored the first runs of the day with a three-RBI double. The Dukes added two more runs on a fielder's choice to take a five-run lead.
The Golden Eagles created opportunities throughout the game, but the Dukes stranded a total of nine Southern Miss runners, holding the team to just two runs throughout the match.Â
JMU pitcher Kirsten Fleet, who came in relief for Payton List, earned the win, and Alissa Humphrey picked up a save for the Dukes. Southern Miss starter Holly Craft received the loss.
Southern Miss got two runners on base early in the top of the first as Hannah Borden advanced to third after reaching on a walk and Natalie Taylor singled and stole second. However, both runners were stranded. The Golden Eagles created another chance to score in the following frame, as Lauren Lindsey, Maria Smith and Borden loaded the bases with walks. However, List and the Dukes escaped the jam with a flyout to right field.
Kayla Agner gave Southern Miss its first hit of the day in the third inning with a single that dropped down into left field. As Jana Lee worked in the circle, Agner delivered again with the Golden Eagles' first run of the game on an RBI single. Lindsey followed with another RBI single to trim the deficit.
Lee continued to minimize JMU's offense, but the Dukes added one insurance run on a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning. Lee finished the game through five innings pitched with four hits, one run and one walk allowed with three strikeouts.
As Southern Miss looked for a way to come back in the seventh, Humphrey and the Dukes retired the side in order to cement its victory.
Agner wrapped up her final game at Southern Miss with two hits, her fourth multi-hit game of the season. Borden also concluded her final game with the Golden Eagles with two walks, adding to her career tally of 107, the second most in program history.Â
Southern Miss concludes its second season in the Sun Belt, making conference tournament appearances in consecutive seasons for the first time since 2012-2013.
