LAFAYETTE, La.-Southern Miss Softball (20-21, 8-8 Sun Belt) held Louisiana (31-15, 15-1 Sun Belt) to just two runs Friday night at Lamson Park, but fell short against the Ragin' Cajuns 2-1.
Southern Miss designated player and pitcher Jana Lee followed her two complete game performances last weekend against Georgia State, throwing a third consecutive complete game as she limited the Cajuns to two runs, the fewest the team has scored in a home conference game since last season on May 13, 2023. After allowing two runs in the first inning, Lee and the Golden Eagles played five shutout innings, allowing Southern Miss' batters an attempt to cut the deficit.
Graduate student catcher Hannah Borden did exactly that in the fifth inning, blasting a solo home run off of the scoreboard to put Southern Miss on the board.
The solo shot marked Borden's 14th home run of the season, which is one short of the single season program record set by Ashley Berman in 1999.
While Borden narrowed Louisiana's lead, the Cajuns' starter Sam Landry continued to work in the circle, holding the Golden Eagles scoreless for the remainder of the game on the way to her 17th win of the season.
Landry registered a season-high nine strikeouts, giving up just three hits and three walks. Following Borden as the leadoff hitter, Jana Lee and Natalie Taylor were the only Golden Eagles to earn a hit off of Landry in the match.
The Ragin' Cajuns held onto a 2-0 lead after Maddie Hayden hit an RBI double, followed by an RBI single from Alexa Langeliers in the first inning.
As Southern Miss entered the seventh inning looking to make a comeback, Landry struckout the side in order to end the match.
Up Next
The Golden Eagles will conclude the series tomorrow with a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m.
