HATTIESBURG, Miss. – On an overcast and windy morning in Hattiesburg, sunshine broke through the clouds as Southern Miss football finished its first scrimmage of spring practice at The Rock.
The Golden Eagles started the morning with their usual stretching routine and individual workouts that are on the normal practice plan. From there, offense and defense broke off to their respective sidelines to start the scrimmage.
Freshman Jalen Washington flashed his talent as the Houston, Miss., native ripped off a 45-yard touchdown and then added another touchdown run from just inside the 20-yard line. Fellow freshman John White showed his arm talent when he connected with Javieon "J.J." Butler for a 35-yard deep ball. White also ripped off 17 and 25-yard completions.
Ethan Crawford, Billy Wiles and Tate Rodemaker each recorded a completion of 30-plus yards, while Crawford connected with Keyshawn Buckley on a 47-yard throw. The defense also flexed its power under new coordinator Clay Bignell. Arian Gregory picked off White early in the scrimmage. Jameer Lewis and Eric Thomas sacked Rodemaker and Crawford on a couple of highlight-reel plays.
Southern Miss hit the halfway point for spring practice and will continue on Tuesday, March 26, with another practice. The next scheduled scrimmage is April 6, which is the annual spring game and final practice of the semester.
