HATTIESBURG, Miss.-After splitting its doubleheader against ULM Saturday, the Golden Eagles (12-14, 1-2 Sun Belt) fell 3-0 to the Warhawks (19-10, 2-1 Sun Belt) in Sunday night's rubber match at the Southern Miss Softball Complex.
ULM's starting pitcher Victoria Abrams and Maddie Nichols combined for the shutout. Nichols fanned five batters late in the game on the way to her first save of the season, and Abrams earned her seventh win of the season.
Jana Lee took the circle for Southern Miss for the first time since Feb. 23, throwing her second complete game of the season and receiving her second loss of the season.
Five Golden Eagles each fielded singles in the match, but Southern Miss could not convert any runs, leaving seven runners stranded throughout the game.
After Lee ended the first frame with a strikeout, graduate student Hannah Borden led the Golden Eagles off with a single through right side.
Three quick outs ended the inning, leading to a fast start from ULM's offense as two Warhawks reached base. A throwing error from Lee to first base allowed both runners to reach home for the game's first score.
ULM threatened to add more in the third inning with three hits, but Natalie Taylor made a quick throw on a double to Maria Smith at shortstop, who then connected at home plate with Hannah Borden for a tagout to end the inning and prevent the run.
The Golden Eagles then saw an opportunity in the following frame, loading the bases as Smith and Lee singled, along with a walk from Taylor. However, the Warhawks escaped the jam, leaving all three runners stranded.
Carlee Durham and Gordon each singled in the fourth inning, but were both left on base from a flyout to left field.
Nichols came into the match in the sixth inning, retiring the side with two consecutive strikeouts. After the Warhawks added insurance with an RBI single, Nichols retired the side in order with another three consecutive strikeouts to end the game and decide the series.
Borden reached 182 career hits in the match, passing recent Southern Miss alumni Tata Davis' total for the seventh most hits in program history. Borden has reached 35 hits already this season, continuing a career-long 16-game hitting streak.
Up Next
The Golden Eagles will face Nicholls in a midweek contest in Thibodaux, La. before returning home for a weekend series against Marshall.
