Victor Iwuakor Named Sun Belt Player of the Week

NEW ORLEANS – Southern Miss senior forward Victor Iwuakor was named Sun Belt Player of the Week on Tuesday afternoon.
The Abuja, Nigeria native produced a pair of double-doubles in wins over Old Dominion and Western Michigan last week. Iwuakor scored 12 points and grabbed 11 rebounds against the Monarchs on Wednesday night, while also swatting five Old Dominion shots. He then dropped a career-high 31 points in the MAC-SBC Challenge game against the Broncos, while also grabbing a career-high 13 rebounds.
Following three more blocks against Western Michigan, Iwuakor now has 53 on the season and is the first Golden Eagle to surpass the 50-block mark since Gary Flowers in the 2009-10 season. Iwuakor averaged 21.5 points, 12.0 rebounds, 4.0 blocks and 2.0 steals over the two games last week. In his last nine games, Iwuakor is averaging 13.6 points, 8.1 rebounds and 2.9 blocks per game. He is one of six Division I players to have at least 54 points, 31 rebounds and nine blocks in the month of February.
Iwuakor and the Golden Eagles continue their six-game homestand on Thursday night against ULM. Tip-off at Reed Green Coliseum at 7:30 p.m. on ESPN+.
