HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The Southern Miss men's basketball program unveiled its 2023-24 non-conference schedule on Thursday. The slate is highlighted with the Jacksonville Classic and an in-state battle against Ole Miss in December.Â
The reigning Sun Belt regular season champions will host Delta State in an exhibition at Reed Green Coliseum on Oct. 24. Admission to the game is free and will tipoff at 7 p.m. The Golden Eagles open the regular season against William Carey at home on Nov. 6 at 7 p.m. The Golden Eagles will quickly hit the road as it travels to Akron (Nov. 10) for the MAC-SBC Challenge -- the Zips went 22-11 last season. Jay Ladner's squad returns home to play Xavier (La.) on Nov. 15 before kicking off the Jacksonville Classic against Utah Valley (Nov. 19). Within the Bay Bracket, Southern Miss will play the winner/loser of Cal State Fullerton and Cornell on Nov. 20.Â
The Golden Eagles return home to host South Dakota State (Nov. 22) the day before Thanksgiving. The Jackrabbits are also playing in the Jacksonville Classic, but in the Coast Bracket with Charlotte, George Mason and UCF. Southern Miss then embarks on a stretch that features only one home game over a six-game span. The Golden Eagles travel to Milwaukee (Nov. 25) and UAB (Dec. 1) before a brief stop in Hattiesburg to host Northwestern State on Dec. 9. They hit the road again to play at McNeese (Dec. 13) and Lamar (Dec. 18). It's the second-straight season Southern Miss travels to Beaumont, Texas for a non-conference game.Â
For the first time since 2011, Southern Miss and Ole Miss will meet on the basketball court. The two in-state foes will play in Biloxi at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum on Dec. 23. The Golden Eagles won the 2011 meeting, 86-82, which was played at Reed Green Coliseum. The Rebels had won four of the previous five games before that win.
Non-conference play will be paused until Feb. 10 when the second game of the MAC-SBC Challenge is played. Southern Miss will be the home team and the opponent will be determined at a later date based on numerous factors.Â
