HATTIESBURG, Miss. – As Southern Miss heads into the 2023 season, the Golden Eagles will be looking to replace both their long-time field goal kicker and punter for this season.
Gone are placekicker Briggs Bourgeois, as well as punter Mason Hunt. Bourgeois finished his Golden Eagle career in fourth place in career kick scoring with 215 points, as he totaled 40-of-51 made field goals. Hunt collected a three-year 42.8 punting average over 145 career punts.
The Golden Eagles utilized a good portion of their Wednesday 2-hour, 20-minute practice going over these areas and third-year coach Will Hall said after practice that he had good work in those areas.
"[We were] in shells today and got some good special teams work and some good one-on-one competition with our fly zone," said Hall.
He went on to say that the team is progressing as well as going over the rest of this week's schedule for the program including a big day on Saturday.
"Our young guys are coming on," said Hall. "We're a little banged up right now, which you normally are as physical as we practice through seven (sessions). We've got an off day tomorrow. We'll come back with a lighter day Friday and then we'll scrimmage Saturday which we're looking forward to that."
Hall mentioned the trio of Armondous Cooley, Jordyn Mahaffey and Briason Mays as being on the injury list.
Cooley, a defensive tackle from Tylertown, Miss., in his second year with the program suffered an Achilles tendon injury and is lost for the season. Both Mahaffey, a junior from Foxworth, Miss., and Mays, a redshirt senior from Bolivar, Tenn., should not be lost for long. Mahaffey, who switched from tight end back to the defensive line recently during camp, will be back soon, while Mays was going to be limited in reps in the preseason due to him being an older established player on the roster.
The Golden Eagles return to practice Friday morning as they continue to get ready for the upcoming season and Alcorn State on Saturday, Sept. 2.
Tickets are still available for the six home games this fall. Fans can contact purchase tickets at SouthernMissTickets.com, by calling 1-800-844-TICK (8425) or visit the Pat Ferlise Ticket Office on campus weekdays during normal business hours.
