Football Prepares for Second Scrimmage of Fall Camp

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – As the Southern Miss football programmoves toward the completion of its fall camp, Saturday, with the team's final large-scale preseason scrimmage, Will Hall said Friday after practice that he was pleased with another positive workout session and that he was enthusiastic about his team's health heading into the final practice before classes begin on Monday at the University.
"We've really taken huge strides—I talked about that earlier—it's like an NFL practice with how people aren't going to the ground," said Hall. "There's no, none of this anymore. We just line up and play with great energy. The communication's good."
Saturday's scrimmage gives the Golden Eagle coaches another chance to evaluate players and make decisions on players that will see playing time this fall.
With Fanfest also taking place tomorrow, an hour earlier than originally scheduled at 8:30 a.m., due to the expected hot weather, fans can expect another typical Will Hall scrimmage. Here is what Hall wants to see on both sides of the football.
"I'd like to see us take another step forward tackling, defensively, and it's not like we missed a ton of tackles, but I'd like to see us handle some shifts and motions a little bit better defensively," said Hall. "Offensively, keep pushing it down the field, keep working on explosive (plays), keep throwing it around like we do, and keep taking another step-in, pass pro.
"We've come a long way in that. And then, to be honest with you, it's kind of boring to the fans, but I'm excited about what we do with kickoff cover versus kickoff return and punt versus punt return, that's exciting. We're one of the few people that go live with that in the country, and it is awesome. We've got 22 players on the field rolling and I think we've got some dynamic potential return men."
Following Saturday's practice, the Golden Eagles will be off both Sunday and Monday, with classes starting that day, before returning to the practice fields on Tuesday.
The season opens at home Saturday, Sept. 2, against Alcorn State and tickets are still available for that game as well as the final five home games this fall.
