HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss football team went through its first long, extended scrimmage Saturday morning at The Rock.
The Golden Eagles worked on every aspect of the game as the first, second and third teams all got into the action on offense, defense and special teams.
Despite the hot conditions on the game field, the Golden Eagles worked for over two hours covering different game-like situations.
"Our guys flew around and played hard today, and it is going to be hard for me to single out a lot of things for y'all," said third-year coach Will Hall about the team's performance Saturday morning. "I was the head coach for about 150 snaps right then."
Hall did go on to praise his kicking game's effort that saw plenty of action in the scrimmage as well.
"It was awesome to get the kicking game work as you saw us go good on good (starters versus starters) for both KOC (kickoff coverage) versus KOR (kickoff return) and punt versus punt return," said Hall. "That is going to be awesome to watch (on film)."
Hall said he was pleased with his top three quarterbacks that saw action in the scrimmage, including redshirt-junior Holman Edwards, redshirt-sophomore Billy Wiles and freshman Ethan Crawford.
"Our first three quarterbacks really executed at a high level," said Hall. "Holman, Billy and Ethan all made some plays, and I don't remember them having a turnover. They read things perfectly and there are some things I want them to do a little bit better, but we grew at that position."
On defense, both Brodarius Lewis and MJ Daniels registered forced fumbles, while Sentario Willis recovered one and returned it for a touchdown and senior Jay Stanley recovered one.
The Golden Eagles will take Sunday off before returning to the practice fields on Monday morning. That time will give the coaching staff plenty of time to breakdown this first scrimmage.
"We will get in here and grade the tape and continue to move forward," said Hall. "We have one more week of fall camp and a great opportunity to get better every day."
The season opens at home Saturday, Sept. 2, against Alcorn State and tickets are still available for that game as well as the final five home games this fall.
