HATTIESBURG, Miss. – While the Southern Miss football team took off the pads Thursday morning, the preparation for next Saturday's season opener against Liberty continued with a workout under cloudy and cooler temperatures at M.M. Roberts Stadium.
"We got some really good work on our punt block and on some special teams, including kickoff cover, as we took the pads off today," said Southern Miss second-year coach Will Hall about his team's practice. "We got a lot of good Liberty work as our plan (for that game) continues to come together. Our kids understand what a tremendous challenge that this is, and I hope our fan base does too.
"This is one of those deals where Southern Miss has to be a 'We" program. It can't be "They", it can't be "You," it has got to be us. That is us as a football program, collectively with our fans, filling up The Rock and in it every time."
The Golden Eagles open the season with a Liberty team that finished 8-5 a year ago and defeated Eastern Michigan 56-20 in the LendingTree Bowl in Mobile, Ala.
Hall was asked following practice what makes the Flames a tough team.
"They are already winning and understand how to do the things it takes to win," said Hall. "They have been great on defense. Their defensive coordinator worked with me at West Georgia and their co-defensive coordinator worked with me at Tulane, and I have great respect for them. Coach (Hugh) Freeze offensively has always been very good and they have a quarterback that was a phenomenal player in the Big 12 at Baylor. It has a lot of returners that expects to be one of best Group of Five programs in America this year."
The Golden Eagles return to the practice field Friday morning.
Season, as well as single game, tickets for the 2022 home schedule are available by visiting SouthernMissTickets.com, by calling 1-800-844-TICK (8425) or by visiting the Pat Ferlise Ticket Office, weekdays, during normal business hours.
