HATTIESBURG, Miss. --Â The Southern Miss football team completed fall camp Saturday with its second scrimmage under second-year head coach Will Hall.Â
Quarterback Ty Keyes started off his day with a 65-yard touchdown pass to Jakarius Caston in front of Golden Eagle fans partaking in Fan Fest. Keyes came back out the next series and dished a 66-yard gain to Janari Dean.Â
"Ty's got a lot of confidence," said Hall after his performance today. "You're talking about a kid that started almost 60 games in high school and played in four games last year. He's played a lot of football even though he's young. He's always been successful and there is a lot of confidence there. It was great to see him have a great day today. Ty's a great kid and I don't know if there's been a day where it hasn't been a joy to be around him."
Keyes and Caston then connected on another pass later in the scrimmage that went for a 75-yard score. After the scrimmage, Hall raved about Caston's performance and said he was one of the best players in Conference USA last year but mentioned that the offense just struggled to get him the ball.Â
"Jakarius Caston is a great player. Every time you all ask me who is a breakout player -- we think it's him," Hall said. "He was one of the best players in Conference USA last year, but we just couldn't get him the ball. He's a big country kid from Adams Christian and then played at Hinds for one of the Mississippi legends. He's a good Southern Miss kid, just a great kid. It was good to get him the ball today."
Hall also praised the defense who he said made great plays throughout all of fall camp. He then listed every defensive staffer and had high remarks for the work they have done to get the Nasty Bunch ready for the season opener against Liberty on Sept. 3.Â
"I can't say enough about our defense and all those guys do a phenomenal job. We do some really good stuff on defense," Hall said.
The Golden Eagles will take off Sunday and Monday before returning to the practice field on Tuesday to continue getting ready for Liberty.Â
"What's next? Some good worship tomorrow and thank the good Lord that we get to coach at a place like this with great kids," Hall said. "We'll kind of hit the reset and we'll lift and meet on Monday to watch this tape. On Tuesday we'll keep sharpening our blade and start getting ready for Liberty. They're a great program. We've got to put everything we got into it."
