Football Focuses on Fundamentals Following Tuesday's Scrimmage

HATTIESBURG, Miss. --Â Southern Miss football coach Will Hall started his Wednesday presser letting the media know that the team was back in helmets today after playing a physical scrimmage the day before. Despite that, the Golden Eagles still attacked the day with urgency.Â
"We were back in helmets today to take a little bit off of them," Hall said. "It was a great day for fundamental work and we did a lot of footwork and hand placement drills. We got a lot of great special team situational work in right there working with three units."
A new day also meant that Hall and his staff were able to watch film from Tuesday's scrimmage. Southern Miss second-year head coach sung his praises for several position groups, but also noted there are several areas that still need to be improved before the Golden Eagles host Liberty in the season opener on Sept. 3.Â
"We are playing well up front on the offensive line," said Hall after speaking about what he saw on film. "Our passing game is probably the weakest part of our team right now, though; we just aren't executing in that. I've been really pleased with how we've ran the ball, with our o-lines progression and our tight ends have really shown improvement. We tackled well on defense yesterday after going back and watching the film."
One thing that Hall mentioned was that his quarterbacks still have room to grow, but it was hard to tell where they are at since the bunch is not live during practice or scrimmages. With quarterbacks that can run the ball, Hall was quick to say that Ty Keyes and Zach Wilcke would have picked up yardage on the ground running the ball.
"I thought Ty [Keyes] would have run for a lot of yards yesterday if he was live," Hall said. "I thought that we didn't complete a lot of passes -- some of that was on our quarterbacks and some of that was on dropped balls.Â
"We had a lot of dropped balls. [Zach] Wilcke flashed his arm talent a lot, but he's got to continue to learn to be a college quarterback with everything we're doing. Trey [Lowe] was steady. We bounced back today and had a much better day."
Part of the credit for the offensive disruptions must go to the Nasty Bunch defense. The group has flashed its talent several times during camp while Eric Scott, Jr. and Natrone Brooks have solidified their roles on that side of the ball.Â
"I think we're good with our two starting corners -- Eric Scott and Natrone Brooks have been great," Hall said. "Our other guys have got to continue to improve in that. But I really think E. Scott and Natrone have been really good all fall camp."
