DALLAS - The PwC SMU Athletic Forum released Wednesday morning the preseason candidates for the 2022 Doak Walker Award, including Southern Miss sophomore Frank Gore, Jr. The Forum annually presents the award to the nation's top college running back.
Â
The Miami, Fla., product led the Golden Eagles in rushing for the second-straight season in 2021, collecting 801 yards on 149 carries with a 4.5 per rush average to go along with five rushing scores.
Â
His longest rush of the year was 51 yards against Grambling State as he enjoyed 100-yard performances against the Tigers with 162 yards. His other 100-yard game of the year came against nationally ranked UTSA with 123 as he now holds five 100-yard rushing performances in his career.
Â
Late last season, Gore, Jr., was asked to increase his role in captaining the offense by helping the Golden Eagles run the wildcat offense, that many Southern Miss faithful dubbed the "Superback Offense" over the final three contests of the season. After leading the team to an almost upset of nationally ranked UTSA in San Antonio, Gore, Jr., helped Southern Miss win their final two games of the year.
Â
Over those final three games, Gore, Jr., also completed 10-fo-16 passes for 189 yards and four touchdowns. His touchdown throws were for 9 and 39 yards at Louisiana Tech to go along with a pair of 34-yard strikes in the season finale against FIU.
Â
Gore, Jr., has 1,509 career rushing yards in two seasons to go along with seven rushing scores and 29 catches for 252 yards and one touchdown.
Â
The Golden Eagles open practice for the 2022 campaign early next month and begin the season at home against Liberty, Saturday, Sept. 3, at 6 p.m.
