NEW ORLEANS, La. – Twelve days after officially joining the Sun Belt Conference, the Southern Miss men's basketball team was handed its 2022-23 conference slate on Tuesday afternoon.
"From experience as an opponent and from what I've seen on film, the Sun Belt is going to be a strong basketball conference," said head coach Jay Ladner. "There are great coaches and outstanding talent from top to bottom in this conference. I'm excited to begin play as a member of the Sun Belt and the challenges it will certainly provide."
Southern Miss opens its 18-game Sun Belt slate when it welcomes Troy to the Hub City on Thursday, Dec. 29. The Golden Eagles lead the all-time series, 15-1, and it will mark the first meeting at Reed Green Coliseum since an 89-71 win in 2017. Following the conference opener, Appalachian State will travel to Hattiesburg for New Year's Eve showdown on Saturday, Dec. 31. The Mountaineers have failed to beat the Golden Eagles in their only two meetings.
The Black and Gold will then hit the road for a four-game stretch that includes stops at Louisiana, ULM, Marshall and Arkansas State. The January 5 meeting against the Ragin' Cajuns marks the second meeting in as many years after not having played each other since 2009. Ladner's squad then makes the short trip to Monroe on Jan. 7 to face ULM for the second-straight season after dropping a nail biter to the Warhawks last year. The following weekend, Southern Miss travels to former C-USA foe Marshall on Thursday, Jan. 12. It will then make the lengthy trip to Arkansas State on Saturday, Jan. 14 to close out the road swing. It will mark the first time since 2003 that the two schools have met and the 28th meeting all-time.
The Golden Eagles return to Hattiesburg to open a four-game home stand on Thursday, Jan. 19 against South Alabama. The Jaguars will make the two-hour trek to Hattiesburg for the first time since the 2020 season. Southern Miss will then play host to James Madison on Saturday, Jan. 21. It will be the Golden Eagles' first meeting against the Dukes, who also joined the Sun Belt on July 1. Arkansas State will then complete the home-and-home series when it heads to Hattiesburg on Thursday, Jan. 26. Southern Miss will close out the home stand on Saturday, Jan. 28 when it welcomes Texas State to Reed Green Coliseum for the first time in program history.
Southern Miss will open the month of February at Troy on Thursday, Feb. 2. It will then head to Georgia State on Saturday, Feb. 4 to take on the Panthers for the first time since 2015.
After the brief road trip, Louisiana will travel to Hattiesburg on Thursday, Feb. 9 in what will be the final meeting between to the two schools of the regular season. Two days later, ULM will come to Reed Green Coliseum on Saturday, Feb. 11. The Golden Eagles have won 17 of the 22 meetings against ULM at The Greenhouse.
The Golden Eagles then head to South Alabama for the second consecutive season when the Jaguars play host to Southern Miss on Thursday, Feb. 16. Southern Miss then returns home for its final home game of the regular season when it hosts Georgia Southern on Saturday, Feb. 18. Senior Day is tentatively scheduled for the Saturday contest against the Eagles.
Southern Miss closes Sun Belt action at Old Dominion on Wednesday, Feb. 22 and then heads to Texas State on Friday, Feb. 24. All game times will be announced at a later date.
The Sun Belt Conference Tournament will be held Feb. 28 – March 6 at the Pensacola Bay Center in Pensacola, Fla. All 14 teams will qualify for the tournament.
