Football Reports for Fall Camp

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – It was reporting day for the football team at Southern Miss Thursday afternoon as the first fall camp of the Will Hall era officially got underway.
A total of 110 Golden Eagles reported Thursday and the squad went through equipment checks, a pair of team meetings, as well as position group meetings to get things started on the opening day.
Southern Miss goes through its first practice session Friday morning on the Golden Eagle campus as preparations for 2021 continue for the season opener at South Alabama, Saturday, Sept. 4.
Heading into camp, the Golden Eagles return 50 letterwinners from a season ago, including 26 starters. Nine of those starters return on offense and 10 on defense with seven back on special teams.
Among those returners include the top rusher from a season ago, Frank Gore, Jr., who tallied 708 yards on 121 carries, along with top receiver Jason Brownlee, who collected team highs for catches (34) and receiving yards (610) to go along with five touchdown receptions.
On the defensive side, top returning tackler, Hayes Maples, comes back after putting together 91 stops last year, including a team-best 8.0 tackles for loss. Second-leading tackler, Malik Shorts, posted 81 stops last season.
During camp, the Golden Eagles will utilize morning practices and will start with helmets and shorts on Friday per NCAA regulations.
