8/31/2021 1:00:00 PM | Men's Basketball
HATTIESBURG, Miss. -Â Southern Miss head men's basketball coach Jay Ladner has announced the team's 2021-22 schedule as the former Golden Eagle embarks on his third campaign at the helm of the squad.Â
Â
"Our schedule is the usual challenge," Ladner said. "You are beginning to see the results of our commitment to playing teams that resonate with our fan base as well as using our schedule to help accomplish our vision of returning Southern Miss basketball to national prominence.
Â
"Longtime rivals and Sun Belt Conference favorites Louisiana are on the schedule along with South Alabama and ULM. Challenging road trips to TCU, ECU and SIU are on there as well as a Thanksgiving tournament at Montana."Â Â
Â
The Golden Eagles' first three games will be at home with Delta State coming to Reed Green Coliseum for a Thursday exhibition at 7 p.m. on Nov. 4. William Carey (Nov. 9) and Louisiana (Nov. 12) will round out the opening slate of home games before Southern Miss hits the road for a non-conference game at TCU (Nov. 15). The Golden Eagles return from Fort Worth, Texas to face Lamar (Nov. 21) at home.
Â
Southern Miss then heads to the Zootown Classic (Nov. 24-26) where they will be joined by UC San Diego, UNC Wilmington and Montana in Missoula, Mont. After spending Thanksgiving in Montana, the Golden Eagles make the short trip to South Alabama (Dec. 1) and then end the road trip at Southern Illinois (Dec. 4).
Â
Men's basketball returns to Reed Green Coliseum to host Loyola New Orleans (Dec. 11) and Jacksonville (Dec. 14). Ladner and the Golden Eagles head to ULM (Dec. 18) and East Carolina (Dec. 21) to cap off the non-conference slate.
Â
"Jacksonville and Lamar both visit Reed Green Coliseum for return games from last year," Ladner said. "We might have the toughest schedule in the league and we are excited about accepting that challenge." Â
Â
The 18-game Conference-USA slate starts with home games against WKU (Dec. 30) and a New Year's Day game against Marshall. Southern Miss will make the annual Texas swing to battle UTSA (Jan. 6) and UTEP (Jan. 8). It will then head to LA Tech (Jan. 13) before hosting the Bulldogs three days later at Reed Green Coliseum. Following the brief stop at home, the Golden Eagles head to Murfreesboro, Tenn. to play Middle Tennessee (Jan. 22).
Â
The January slate of games come to an end with North Texas (Jan. 27) and Rice (Jan. 29) making a stop at Reed Green Coliseum. A three-game C-USA road trip starts with stops at FIU (Feb. 3) and FAU (Feb. 5) before stopping in Birmingham, Ala. to face C-USA rival UAB (Feb. 10).
Â
Southern Miss ends C-USA play with four of the last six games at home. It hosts UTSA (Feb. 17) and UTEP (Feb. 19) before making a second Texas swing with trips to North Texas (Feb. 24) and Rice (Feb. 26). UAB (March 2) comes to Hattiesburg before the Golden Eagles close regular season play with a Saturday contest against Charlotte (March 5).
Â
The Conference USA Tournament will take place March 9-12 at The Star in Frisco, Texas.
