HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- Southern Miss' Jaron Pierre Jr. earned Conference USA All-Freshman accolades for his accomplishments this season, as announced Monday by the league.
Pierre was a three-time Freshman of the Week and is the first to earn such a postseason honor since D.J. Newbill in the 2010-11 campaign.
The New Orleans native had several memorable moments during the season, including forcing a turnover and hitting the ensuing game-tying layup as Southern Miss rallied from seven down with 45 seconds left in regulation to UTEP, eventually winning 74-66 in overtime. His first-career start was Dec. 12 against South Alabama, scoring 25 points on 9-for-11 shooting (6-for-8 from deep), marking the highest-scoring game by a Golden Eagle freshman since R.L. Horton in 2007.
Against Middle Tennessee, he had 24 points and 10 rebounds (his second double-double of the season, also against South Alabama), and the next day went 4-for-4 at the foul line in the final 29 seconds to help the team to a 64-59 win. For the year, he is averaging 9.0 ppg while ranking second on the team in steals (26) and three-point makes (31).
Others on the All-Freshman team include Kenneth Lofton Jr. (Louisiana Tech), Rubin Jones (North Texas), Jordan Ivy-Curry (UTSA) and Dayvion McKnight (WKU).
Southern Miss starts C-USA Championships play Tuesday against Rice. Tip-off from Frisco, Texas is at 7 p.m. on ESPN Plus.
