Southern Miss Dominates Day One of the Black and Gold Invitational

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss started the season strong winning two consecutive games in the Black and Gold Invitational. The Golden Eagles got the sweep winning the first two games of the season, and their season opener against North Dakota 3-0.
Starting pitcher Kaylan Ladner had an outstanding outing in the first game of the season dominating the Fighting Hawks' lineup through six innings and earning the win. Ladner, a native of Kiln, Miss. punched out five in her debut allowing nine hits and only four walks. The final inning of the first game was closed out by Morgan Leinstock who continued Ladner's success. Leinstock's appearance earned her the first save of her Southern Miss career and also dawned her first appearance as a Golden Eagle. The two together combined for a shutout and a dominant performance for the Golden Eagles.
The bats were hot early in the game with Terrica Williams getting the first hit of the season on a line drive to left field. This was the first hit of Williams Southern Miss career. Following William's hit Alyssa Davis ripped a double notching the first RBI of her senior campaign. Maddie Vasquez kept the ball rolling by lacing a single up the middle earning two RBI's. The first inning saw three runs on three hits, and carried the Eagles into a season opening win.
Defensively, the Golden Eagles brought their a-game. Great defensive efforts came from Maddie Vasquez and Destini Brown. The two combined for multiple putouts and made major contribution to the game's shutout.
The following matchup vs Murray State was a close contest ultimately resulting in a 2-1 victory for Southern Miss.
Junior, Makenna Pierce, gave an outstanding effort from within the circle. In the first inning Pierce opened quickly by striking out the side. Her success continued through the fifth inning racking up seven strikeouts. In the sixth, Morgan Leinstock made her second appearance of the night, and earned the evening's second save. The two combined for ten strikeouts giving up only four walks in the outing.
Offensively, Alyssa Davis led off the second inning with a rip into right field resulting in a score for the Golden Eagles. Maddie Vasquez picked up an RBI in the fourth inning scoring pinch runner Columbia Holeman. The two scores tipped the scale for the Golden Eagles resulting in the season's second victory.
The Golden Eagles will be back in action tomorrow in back-to-back games vs. SIU at 2:00 p.m. (CT) and then against North Dakota at 4:30 p.m. (CT).
