HATTIESBURG, Miss. --Â Southern Miss men's basketball freshman Rashad Bolden earned C-USA Freshman of the Week honors after exploding for a career-high 29 points in Wednesday's 80-66 win against UNC Wilmington at the Zootown Classic.
"We knew we were getting a good one, but he's even exceeded those expectations," said head coach Jay Ladner. "Rashad is a great young man on and off the floor. He's what our program is about moving forward, and I could not be prouder of him. He's very deserving of this honor. Â t will be the first of many"Â
Bolden joins Bernard Haslett and Morris Wood in the Southern Miss record book as the only Golden Eagles to score 29 points in a single game as a freshman. The Jackson, Miss. native was 11-of-12 from the floor with five three-pointers and had already set a career-high in points in the first half alone against the Seahwaks. His .916 shooting clip ranks fourth all-time for a single-game shooting percentage in program history.Â
The St. Andrews High School product joins Nebraska's Bryce McGowens as the only true freshmen to score at least 29 points in a single game this season. Bolden is shooting nearly 50 percent from deep through seven games this season and is averaging 7.6 points per game. Bolden is the first Golden Eagle to be named Freshman of the Week since Jaron Pierre, Jr. on Jan. 18, 2021. Pierre was a three-time honoree last season.Â
Bolden and the Golden Eagles continue their five-game road trip at South Alabama (7 p.m.) on Wednesday night.
