HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- Southern Miss fell victim to a 14-0 run midway through the second half, dropping a 76-63 decision to visiting Louisiana Tech on Thursday night.
The two teams will rematch Saturday at 2 p.m. in Ruston.
"It was a perplexing second half," head coach Jay Ladner said. "I thought we had played well. Whatever I said or didn't say at the half was wrong. I take full responsibility for it. We just couldn't get it going. A few guys struggled. Louisiana Tech really has no weaknesses, and I like their team. I thought our plan was good, and for the most part we were good at executing it."
The first half never saw more than four points' separation, but Southern Miss found its best spark yet when Tyler Stevenson lobbed a layup alley-oop to DeAndre Pinckney with 37 seconds left. On the ensuing inbounds pass, the Bulldogs rolled it into an empty spot of the floor, and Tae Hardy scooped it and laid it in.
The momentum was short-lived as LA Tech's Amorie Archibald drained a three-pointer in the waning seconds, tying it at 37.
LA Tech's started to pull away with a six-point lead before going on a 14-0 run over 4:05 gave it a 70-50 advantage at 7:10.
"I thought we had times where we settled for perimeter shots, whereas when we were patient, we got good looks and high-percentage shots," Ladner said. "We kind of got away from that and settled on some jumpers. There was a good stretch where the ball never got into the paint, and at times we compounded it by not playing with grit and determination on the defensive end."
Stevenson, Hardy and Pinckney led the way with 15 points apiece. It was Hardy's first action after missing the last two games, both at UTSA, with an injury.
NOTABLE
-This was Southern Miss' first tied halftime score. The Golden Eagles entered 7-1 when leading and had not won when down.
-LA Tech was held to just 7-for-24 shooting from deep (29.2 percent), the fourth time Southern Miss held a league opponent to under 30 percent.
-The Golden Eagles went 11-for-14 at the foul line, putting them at 79.6 percent over the last three games (43-for-54).
-DeAndre Pinckney posted his fourth double-figure scoring game, all of them in league play.
-Tyler Stevenson reached double-figures by halftime. He has finished with 10-plus points in 27 of his 29 career C-USA starts.
-Tyler Morman made his first appearance since Jan. 2 against UTEP.
-Jeffery Armstrong's three-pointer in the final minute was his first-career attempt.
