Golden Eagle Overview
• Southern Miss continues its 104th football season this week, having first fielded a team in 1912. The Golden Eagles are 601-433-27, which is 37th best among FBS teams by winning percentage (.579).
• Southern Miss has captured five-straight winning seasons and 23 over the last 26. The school established its record for seasonal wins in 2011 with 12.
• The Golden Eagles are slated to play seven home games this fall, marking only the second time that they have done that in their history. The only other time came in 1920.
• The program has posted a 153-69 (.689) record at The Rock. Since the 1976 season, the program has finished at .500 or better in home games for a season 39 times.
• Interim coach Scott Walden made his Golden Eagle debut last week against LA Tech, marking the first time Southern Miss has had an interim coach in the middle of a season. Walden is 7-4 as a head coach, having led East Texas Baptist during the 2016 campaign. He was the youngest head coach in the NCAA that season and is currently the youngest sitting head coach in the FBS.
Notes from the Louisiana Tech Game
• Senior WR Tim Jones caught eight passes for a career-high 160 yards to give him his second-straight 100-yard receiving game to start the year and fourth of his career. It also marked the first time he has had a two touchdown day receiving (74 and 20) as a Golden Eagle.
• Jack Abraham collected his fifth game of his career of throwing at least three touchdown passes.
• Both Santrell Latham and Malik Shorts registered career highs for tackles with 14.
• The Golden Eagles notched a turnover for the second-straight game, collecting an interception (Latham's first of his career, setting up a Jones TD catch on the next play).
• Terrence Cherry, Tyrek Moody and Demarcus Jones all made their first start for the Golden Eagles last Saturday.
The Tulane Series
• Southern Miss and Tulane renewed their "Battle for the Bell" rivalry after a nine-year hiatus with the first-ever game played outside of either Hattiesburg or New Orleans when they met in the 2020 Lockheed Martin Armed Forces Bowl.
• The "Battle for the Bell" was added to the series prior to the 1999 game and the Golden Eagles have won nine of 11 between the schools since the addition of the bell to the game.
• The series dates back to 1979 in which the Golden Eagles hold a 23-8 overall advantage and won six of the last seven games between the two schools (for a breakdown of the series please go to page 5 of the notes).
• Both schools were charter members of Conference USA and played in the league together from 1996 until 2013. The two schools did not meet in the Green Wave's final three seasons within C-USA.
• Former Golden Eagle quarterback Keon Howard is expected to start for the Green Wave this Saturday. Howard started eight games (13 games total) while a Golden Eagle and posted 1,564 passing yards on 118-of-220 attempts with 9 touchdowns and 9 interceptions.
• While this game was added due to scheduling issues involving COVID-19 in August, the two schools had already agreed on four regular season games from 2022-2027. The Golden Eagles play the Green Wave in New Orleans during the 2022 and 2026 campaigns and in Hattiesburg in 2023 and 2027.
