HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Mike Slive Foundation is partnering with C-USA on the Block Cancer initiative throughout the month of February to raise awareness for prostate cancer with each C-USA school choosing one conference game as its Block Cancer event. Southern Miss designated the conference game against Florida Atlantic on Thursday, Feb. 13 as its Block Cancer event.
"We're always excited about partnering with any cause that helps everyone," said Southern Miss Head Basketball Coach Jay Ladner. "Cancer doesn't discriminate. I know many people that have been affected by it. Any time we can do our part in helping raise awareness, we are 100 percent supportive."
For the second year, each C-USA school chose one conference game as its Block Cancer event. The teams will wear blue Block Cancer shooting shirts, and coaches will wear blue ties and Foundation lapel pins. During the game, fans will see signage and videos that focus on increasing awareness for prostate cancer. Fans will also have the opportunity to donate online at mikeslivefoundation.org.
"We are proud to support the Block Cancer initiative and the Mike Slive Foundation across our campuses," said C-USA Commissioner Judy MacLeod. "It is a tremendous program that honors Mike Slive's brave fight against prostate cancer, raises awareness, and furthers the cause of his remarkable Foundation."
One in nine men will get prostate cancer in their lifetime, and a man dies of prostate cancer every 20 minutes. African-American men are 1.6 times more likely to get prostate cancer and more than twice likely to die from it. Prostate cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death (after skin cancer) for men.
"We are excited to partner with C-USA for the second year on the Block Cancer initiative," said Anna Slive Harwood, Executive Director of the Mike Slive Foundation. "Using the platform of college athletics to help raise awareness of prostate cancer was my father's vision. We are grateful for the ongoing support of C-USA as we continue to help educate men and their loved ones about this disease. Because one in nine men will get prostate cancer, this is everyone's ball game."
The Block Cancer initiative is possible due to the generous support of many companies, including Brooks Brothers, Prater Flooring, Linell Graphics, and Burton Advertising.
