HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- Timely second-half shots and a stifling defense for 40 minutes helped Southern Miss to a 60-47 victory over ULM on Saturday afternoon.
"I was really pleased with our defensive effort," head coach Jay Ladner said. "We scored at some key times. I think we held them scoreless for seven or eight of the first nine possessions. As we sorted it out, I felt like we were due a run, and our defense held us there long enough to do that."
The 47 points were also Southern Miss' fewest allowed since Feb. 16, 2019 over UTEP.
The Golden Eagles (3-3) broke the game open with a 10-2 run through the 7:15 mark to lead 48-37, its largest of the day. Southern Miss also went 8-for-8 at the foul line in the second half after shooting 5-for-10 in the first. Until five-straight field goals by the two teams at the 13:46 mark, neither had scored since 18:24.
The first half had similar storylines on both sides of the offensive spectrum, as Southern Miss had a 4:37 field-goal drought despite also reeling off a 10-0 run in the first five minutes. The Golden Eagles led 27-26 at the break.
Tae Hardy's career-high 16 points, including going 6-for-7 at the line, was a key element as well.
"I thought Tae kind of carried us until we could get into a rhythm or flow," Ladner said. "We have a lot of confidence in him. Tyler Stevenson was in foul trouble early and had to sit much of the first half. Tae is an intense competitor and a highly-motivated guy. He also comes from a strong junior-college program and understands the process of winning."
Southern Miss concludes its non-conference slate on Monday, Dec. 28 against Loyola New Orleans at 2 p.m.
