Jaron Pierre Jr. Earns C-USA Freshman of the Week Accolade

HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- Southern Miss' Jaron Pierre Jr. has earned C-USA Freshman of the Week honors for his performances against Tulane and South Alabama.
Pierre averaged 18.0 points and 8.0 rebounds per game for the Golden Eagles and really lit it up Saturday, his first start. He scored 11 of the team's first 13 points en route to a 25-point, 10-rebound stat line. It marked the highest-scoring game by a Golden Eagle freshman since program great R.L. Horton in December 2007. It was also the first rookie double-double since Norville Carey in January 2013.
Pierre's week also saw him shoot 13-for-24 and 9-for-16 from deep (56.3 percent), including leading the team in scoring each game.
Pierre, a New Orleans native, now paces Southern Miss with 14.7 ppg to go with his 6.0 rpg. He is the first Player of the Week for the Black and Gold since Leonard Harper-Baker in January 2018 and the first freshman honoree since D.J. Newbill in February 2011.
Southern Miss next plays at Lamar on Tuesday (7 p.m.).
