Â
Southern Miss Head Softball Coach Brian Levin on Sumerlin and Brown being named to the C-USA Softball Preseason All-Conference Team
"Both Lacey and Destini are deserving of being named C-USA Preseason All-Conference. They had outstanding seasons last year. It is evident that the voting members of the conference feel they are capable of having an even bigger 2020 season. They are both incredible young women that work hard, but are really awesome teammates to their peers. I am sure they would be the first to tell you they would not get any recognition without the help of their teammates. We are happy for them, but more so we are proud of how they represent Southern Miss!"
Â
For the 2019 season, Sumerlin posted a .333 batting average, a .630 slugging percentage, a .458 on-base percentage, 46 hits, 42 runs batted in, nine home runs, one triple, 12 doubles, 30 runs scored, 87 total bases, one stolen base, walked 35 times and struck out just eight times in 138 plate appearances. Defensively, she recorded a .918 fielding percentage after starting all 52 of Southern Miss' contests at shortstop.
Â
Aside from ending the season tied with Brown as Southern Miss' team leader in home runs and total bases, Sumerlin also wrapped up the 2019 campaign as the team's leader in slugging percentage and RBI.
Â
The C-USA Preseason All-Conference honor adds to a long list of accolades for the Mobile, Ala. native who earned a spot on the 2019 NFCA Division I South Region First Team, becoming the first Southern Miss player to garner NFCA All-Region First Team honors since Megan Hill in 2009. Sumerlin was also selected to the 2019 C-USA Softball All-Conference First Team and the 2019 Getterman Classic All-Tournament Team (tournament hosted by Baylor University).

"I am excited about it and want to congratulate my teammate, Destini Brown. I cannot wait to put all of the hard work this team has done since August to the test! It is going to be an exciting year!"
Â
Brown, a native of McComb, Miss. ended the 2019 season with a .362 batting average, a .617 slugging percentage, a .505 on-base percentage, 51 hits, 26 runs batted in, nine home runs, one triple, seven doubles, 52 runs scored, 87 total bases, 24 stolen bases and 39 walks. Over the course of 52 games (51 starts) in 2019, Brown committed just one error, earning a fielding percentage of .988.
Â
In addition to finishing the season tied with Sumerlin as Southern Miss' team leader in home runs and total bases, Brown concluded the 2019 season as the team's leader in runs scored, hits, walks, on-base percentage, stolen bases and total plate appearances (191).
Â
To go along with her impressive stats, the former Parklane Academy (McComb, Miss.) star was also named to the 2019 C-USA Softball All-Conference First Team and the 2019 Easton Crimson Classic All-Tournament Team (tournament hosted by the University of Alabama).
