Golden Eagles Travel to Starkville to Face the Bulldogs in Football

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – In what proves to be a challenging month of September for the Southern Miss football team starts Saturday with the Golden Eagles traveling to Starkville to face in-state foe Mississippi State.
The Golden Eagles and Bulldogs will face off at 2:30 p.m., from Davis Wade Stadium at Scott Field. The game can be seen on ESPNU and heard on one of the affiliates of the Southern Miss Sports Network from Learfield IMG College.
The contest opens a string of three-straight road games for the Golden Eagles as they travel to Troy (Sept. 14) and Alabama (Sept. 21), before returning home to open Conference USA play against UTEP (Sept. 28) in their final game of the month.
Southern Miss began the 2019 season with a 38-10 victory over Alcorn State and now travels to Starkville for the 17th time in the 30th game to be played in the series, which dates back to 1935. The Bulldogs won their opener 38-28 over Louisiana-Lafayette in the Louisiana Superdome last Saturday.
Junior quarterback Jack Abraham (Oxford, Miss.) leads the Golden Eagle offense into north Mississippi over the weekend to snap a four-game losing streak to the Bulldogs. Abraham, the nation's top passer a year ago in terms of percentage at 73.1, hit 64.3 percent in the opening game last week and threw for 293 yards and a touchdown in pacing the Golden Eagle offense.
Senior wide receiver Jordan Mitchell (Hattiesburg, Miss.), the only current Golden Eagle who played in the last meeting between the two schools, opened his final season last weekend with seven catches and 133 yards. It was his second career 100-yard receiving game.
On defense, the Golden Eagles limited the Braves to 229 total yards last weekend which ranks No. 25 in the FBS in total defense. The team has now not allowed a 100-yard rusher over the last 15 games. They will have their work cut out for them in Starkville, though, as Bulldogs rusher Kylin Hill collected 197 yards on 27 carries to open the MSU season.
The Southern Miss kicking game saw the debut of freshman kicker Andrew Stein (Slidell, La.), who enjoyed a perfect day in his debut last week with three extra and three field goals to go along with a 66.0 kickoff average and five touchbacks, as he was one of 10 true freshman kickers in the FBS to start for their team.
This game between the Golden Eagles and Bulldogs starts a slate of three games that pit the two schools together. The two in-state institutions will be battle again in Starkville in 2023 and come back to Hattiesburg in 2025.
