Full Day Saturday for the Southern Miss Football Team

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Saturday marked a full day for the Southern Miss football team.
The squad started the day with its first full-scale scrimmage of fall camp during the morning hours at M.M. Roberts Stadium, before going through media day, the school's 24th annual Eagle Fanfare at the Thad Cochran Center and finally sitting for a team photo as well individual group shots back in the stadium.
The morning scrimmage produced four touchdown passes from the duo of redshirt junior Jack Abraham (Oxford, Miss.) and sophomore Tate Whatley (Lakeland, Fla.). Abraham, who threw for 239 yards on 19-of-36 passing with an interception, tossed a 25-yard scoring strike. Whatley, who threw touchdown passes of 25, 25 and 12 yards, ended the day 17-of-26 with three interceptions.
Both freshman T.Q. Newsome (Gulfport, Miss.) and junior Dalton Bradfield (Madison, Miss.) each tallied short touchdown runs. Junior Quez Watkins (Athens, Ala.) had 15 yards rushing on one carry, while both redshirt freshman Jordan Kempf (Kemp, Texas) and redshirt sophomore Darius Maberry (Bolton, Miss.) has 13 yards each.
Junior Tim Jones (Biloxi, Miss.) led the way in receiving with 65 yards on three catches, including two for touchdowns (both 25 yards), while redshirt junior Kevin Perkins (Tunica, Miss.) added three catches for 62, while seniors Jordan Mitchell (Hattiesburg, Miss.) and Neil McLaurin (Laurel, Miss.) added four catches each for 52 and 49 yards, respectively.
Both redshirt freshman Naricuss Driver (Griffin, Ga.) and Watkins each had one reception, both for touchdowns. Driver was from 25 yards and Watkins scored on a 12-yard pass.
Defensively, the Golden Eagles returned four interceptions for touchdowns, including two from redshirt senior Ernest Gunn (Selma, Ala.), who returned them 36 and 100 yards. Senior Taj Jones (Corona, Calif.) added a 65-yard interception return for a touchdown and freshman Markel McLaurin (Collins, Miss.) returned a pick for 30 yards and a score.
After enjoying Sunday off, the Golden Eagles return to practice Monday in preparation for their season opener, Saturday, Aug. 31, against Alcorn State. Game time is set for 6 p.m.
