HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Fourth-year Southern Miss football coach Jay Hopson welcomed 110 Golden Eagles on campus Thursday to get ready for the 2019 season.
Practice starts Friday on the Golden Eagle campus, but the players used this day to check in the dorms, get physicals and have last-minute equipment fittings, before settling in with a pair of team meetings to complete the day's activities.
"I am excited to get camp started," said Hopson Thursday afternoon. "We have had a good summer and everyone has worked hard. We look forward to getting things going tomorrow. There are a lot of competition battles (as we head into camp) and ready to see the guys compete. It's that time of the year, so we are all fired up."
The Golden Eagles, which finished 6-5 a year for its fourth-straight winning season, returns 48 letterwinners from a season ago, including nine starters on offense and six on defense.
Southern Miss was picked to finish second in the Conference USA West Division and had five of its players voted to the league's preseason team including wide receiver Quez Watkins, defensive back Ky'el Hemby, defensive linemen Demarrio Smith and Jacques Turner and linebacker Racheem Boothe. The five selections tied for the most in the league heading into the campaign.
The Golden Eagles open the season Saturday, Aug. 31, when they entertain Alcorn State at M.M. Roberts Stadium for a 6 p.m., contest. Both Southern Miss season and single-game tickets are available at SouthernMissTickets.com, by calling 1-800-844-TICK (8425) or 601-266-5418, as well as visiting the Pat Ferlise Ticket Office weekdays from 8 a.m., until 5 p.m.
