HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- Southern Miss head coach Jay Ladner continued to bolster his first Golden Eagle recruiting class with the signing of Angel Smith, a 6-foot-5, 180-pound guard out of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
"I couldn't be more excited for Angel to be joining the Golden Eagle Basketball family," Ladner said. "I think he's one of the high-profile recruits we've signed here in recent memory. He's got great size and is a great shooter. Angel is an outstanding young man of character, and he checks all the boxes we're looking for."
The former Northeast HS star also received strong interest from Kansas State, Old Dominion, Georgia Southern and Tennessee Tech, among others. MaxPreps ranked him as high as the No. 25 recruit in the state, despite suffering an injury. As a senior, he averaged 18 points, 10 rebounds and five assists per game to help his team to the district title. Smith also played at Cardinal Gibbons HS in Fort Lauderdale earlier in his career.
