AUSTIN, Texas – Southern Miss senior catcher Samantha Papp has been tabbed a NCAA Division I Softball Google Cloud Academic All-American, the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced on Thursday.

Papp was selected to the 2019 NCAA Division I Softball Google Cloud Academic All-America Third Team. 2019 marks the first time that Papp has garnered CoSIDA Academic All-America honors.

Prior to being selected a CoSIDA Academic All-American, Papp was named to the NCAA Division I – District 6 Google Cloud Academic All-District Softball Team in May.

Papp, who currently maintains a 4.0 GPA, is scheduled to graduate with a Bachelor of Science degree in Special Education in December.

Papp is the first Southern Miss student-athlete to be named a CoSIDA Academic All-American since former Southern Miss baseball standout and current Cleveland Indians prospect Nick Sandlin. Sandlin earned CoSIDA Academic All-America honors in 2018.

Papp is just the third student-athlete in the history of the Southern Miss softball program to earn All-America honors, and the first since Charity Butler in 2006.

During her time at Southern Miss, Papp has accumulated numerous academic accolades. She was selected to the C-USA Softball All-Academic Team (2019 and 2018), named a Presidential Scholar (2015-19), a President's List selection (2015-19), a C-USA Commissioner's Honor Roll selection (2015-19) and she was a C-USA Commissioner's Academic Medal recipient (2015-19). In addition, Papp was named the Outstanding Undergraduate Student in Special Education in the School of Education (2019).

For the 2019 season, Papp batted .220, posted a .270 slugging percentage and a .267 on-base percentage. Papp registered a total of 13 runs scored, 31 hits, seven doubles, 14 runs batted in, 38 total bases, seven walks and three stolen bases.

Behind the plate, Papp started all 52 of Southern Miss' games in 2019. She recorded a fielding percentage of .996, tallied 270 putouts, 14 assists and committed just one error.

Papp finished the 2019 season ranked in the top 10 in C-USA in fielding percentage (.996), chances (285) and putouts (270).
