HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The Southern Miss football team has had three full weeks of spring practice under its belts, and now the march to the annual Black and Gold Spring Game has begun. The action is set to begin at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, and it will feature Golden Eagle legends Reggie Collier and Brett Favre as honorary coaches.
Admission is free to the event, and beforehand there will be the annual Future Golden Eagles Camp, a clinic free for ages 14 and under (registration here).
Racheem Boothe, linebacker
On how the spring season has gone
"Spring has been going pretty well. Between our new guys and returners who are having new roles, we are getting everything ready in our scheme."
On one thing the team's stout defense can improve
"We have to get better on our assignments. Sometimes we get away from what we have to do in playing the game. It can be see-ball, get-ball, but we have to see our assignments and play faster.
On the ability to play close to his home of Bassfield
"It's lovely. That's one of the main things. My family can come to all our games and give us their support.
Nick Dawson, defensive end
On what the team is getting out of spring practice
"First of all, we know that we have to work hard and listen. It's the technical things out here that we have to work on to get better every day. We know our potential. We come out every day and do what we can to get better.
On how the team can embrace the challenging fall game schedule
"I love competition. I love knowing the history our school is based upon in playing tough schedules every year. We're going to go out and play our best ball. I love the challenges."
Kevin Perkins, running back
On how he has transitioned from NW Mississippi CC to Southern Miss
"As far as adjustments, everything has been set in place from my junior college coaches. They've guided me down the path to be here and I just trusted them. It wasn't a big adjustment in battling school balance, but I have been working harder in making an impact at Southern Miss."
On how he feels he can use every day
"I would come in and put my all on the line each and every day. As far as making adjustments on the team, I will do whatever I can to make my team better and then hopefully myself as well."
