Southern Miss Softball Set to Host UTSA Over the Weekend

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss softball team (19-16, 5-7 C-USA) will host UTSA (17-18, 6-6 C-USA) in a weekend C-USA series at the Southern Miss Softball Complex in Hattiesburg on April 6th and 7th.

The Golden Eagles and the roadrunners will open the series with a doubleheader beginning at 11:00 a.m. (CT) on Saturday, April 6. Game two of Saturday's doubleheader will follow shortly after the conclusion of game one.

Southern Miss and UTSA will conclude the series with a 10:00 a.m. (CT) series finale on Sunday, April 7.

Saturday's doubleheader and Sunday's series finale were originally scheduled to being at 1:00 p.m. (CT) but both game times were changed due to expected inclement weather.

The last time on the diamond
In their last outing, Southern Miss shutout Sun Belt opponent South Alabama, 2-0 in a midweek road contest in Mobile, Ala. on Wednesday.

Southern Miss sophomore center fielder Destini Brown's two-run double to left field in the top of the first inning proved to be the only hit that manufactured runs in the contest.

Golden Eagles' junior right-handed pitcher Abby Trahan tossed her second complete-game shutout in just four days after going the distance in the circle against the Jaguars on Wednesday.

Noteworthy moments
For the first time in her collegiate career, Southern Miss junior shortstop Lacey Sumerlin played a softball game in her hometown of Mobile, Ala. when Southern Miss faced South Alabama on Wednesday night.

Prior to Southern Miss' Wednesday night contest against South Alabama, the last time that Sumerlin played a softball game in her hometown was as a senior at Baker High School in 2015.

Breaking down the all-time record
Southern Miss currently leads the all-time series, 14-6. The Golden Eagles are 5-4 when hosting the Roadrunners in Hattiesburg, 4-2 in games played in San Antonio, Texas and 5-0 in neutral site matchups.

The last meeting
The last time that Southern Miss and UTSA met, the two teams played a three-game series at Roadrunner Field in San Antonio in 2018 (April 21st and 22nd). Southern Miss won the series, 2-1. The Roadrunners took a 6-4 decision in game one but the Golden Eagles bounced back, winning game two, 5-0 and game three, 10-5.

The opponent
UTSA is led by fifth-year Head Coach Michelle Cheatham. The last time that UTSA took the field, they defeated Incarnate Word 13-2 on Wednesday night in a midweek contest in San Antonio.

Game promotions
Southern Miss will honor the 1999 Southern Miss WCWS team with a 20-year reunion on April 6th and 7th when the Golden Eagles take on the UTSA Roadrunners.

Promotional Lineup to honor the 1999 Southern Miss softball team

Commemorative 1999 team mini posters will be handed out at the gate to fans while supplies last.

Members of the 1999 team will throw out the first pitch on both Saturday, April 6 and Sunday, April 7.

A postgame autograph session with members of the 1999 team is scheduled for Sunday, April 7 following the conclusion of the series finale between Southern Miss and UTSA. All fans are welcome to take part.

In addition, Southern Miss softball will also be taking part in the Stand Up to Caner initiative on Saturday, April 6 and Sunday, April 7.

Stand Up To Cancer promotions

Fans will receive a Stand Up To Cancer rally towel while supplies last. The rally towels will feature a write-in-box and fans will be able to write in the names of their loved ones who have or who are currently battling cancer.

Stickers of various colors that represent different types of cancer will be handed out to fans at the gate so that they may be worn in support of those who have fought or who are currently fighting the disease.
