HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss senior first baseman Sarah Van Schaik and sophomore center fielder Destini Brown were named to the Easton Crimson Classic All-Tournament Team following the conclusion of the tournament hosted by the University of Alabama this past weekend.
Â
Van Schaik, who currently leads the team with a .434 batting average, 23 hits, nine doubles, 15 runs batted in, 34 total bases and a .642 slugging percentage continued to swing a hot bat for the Golden Eagles over the course of the weekend in Tuscaloosa.
Â
At the Easton Crimson Classic, the Petal, Miss. native batted .462 (6-for-13) with four doubles, three runs batted in, 10 total bases, a .769 slugging percentage and a .462 on-base percentage in four games played.
Â
Van Schaik collected a double in each of the Golden Eagles' four games in Tuscaloosa.
Â
One of Van Schaik's biggest hits of the weekend came in Southern Miss' Friday night matchup against #6 Alabama. In the top of the sixth inning, Van Schaik doubled to left center which allowed Chase Nelson to score and pull the Golden Eagles within one run of the Tide.
Â
The senior saved her best game of the weekend for last and went 3-for-4 at the plate with a double and a run batted in to help lead Southern Miss to a 5-2 victory over Michigan State on Saturday night.
Â
Like Van Schaik, Brown proved to be clutch for the Golden Eagles throughout the tournament as well.
Â
The McComb, Miss. native led Southern Miss in the tournament with a .500 batting average and a .667 on-base percentage. In addition, the sophomore notched a run scored, four total bases, four walks and a .500 slugging percentage.
Â
Brown had her biggest game of the weekend on the biggest stage as she reached base safely three times in Southern Miss' Saturday evening contest against #6 Alabama. In the game, Brown went 2-for-2 with a run scored and a walk.
Â
Brown registered her two hits of the game by smacking a single down the right field line in the top of the second inning and by legging out an infield single in the top of the seventh inning.
Â
The center fielder was the lone player in the Golden Eagles' batting order to record a multi-hit game against Alabama freshman pitcher Montana Fouts who has quickly proven to be one of the top arms in all of college softball this season.
Â
Van Schaik and Brown will look to continue their success when Southern Miss travels to Hammond, La. on Wednesday, March 6 for a 6:30 p.m. (CT) matchup against Southeastern Louisiana.
