Abby Trahan on being selected to Softball America's College Top 100 list
"I'm extremely honored and humbled to be named to Softball America's College Top 100 list. I give all the thanks to God and the teammates that have played next to me. I can't wait to see what this new season brings with my amazing teammates!"
Trahan, who is entering her first season with the Golden Eagles, spent the two previous seasons playing for Saint Francis University (Loretto, Pa.). During her time with the Red Flash, Trahan was a dominant force in the circle.
As a sophomore at Saint Francis in 2018, the Kaplan, La. native was named NEC Pitcher of the Year, NFCA All-Great Lakes Region Second Team and First Team All-NEC. Additionally, Trahan led the NEC in wins and appearances and set single-season school records for wins, appearances and innings pitched. She also finished the season ranked seventh in the wins category in Division I softball and 25th in shutouts.
Trahan's 2018 season highlights include: posting an 11-0 record with a minuscule 0.61 ERA in 11 appearances in NEC play, recording 11 complete-game appearances over the course of the season without allowing an earned run, notching 19 complete-game performances in which she gave up one or less earned runs and by being named NEC Pitcher of the Week six times.
Trahan's dominance in the circle continued into the 2018 postseason as she limited long-time college softball powerhouse Arizona to just one run and two hits in six innings during the Red Flash's NCAA Regional contest against the Wildcats.
The right-hander ended the 2018 season with a 28-12 record and a 2.55 ERA. She tossed a total of 255.2 innings, allowed 210 hits, 117 runs, 93 earned runs, issued 69 walks and struck out 186 batters.
Trahan started her collegiate career off strong by being named NEC Rookie of the Year and NFCA All-Region Third Team during her freshman campaign. She made 35 appearances in the circle during the 2017 season, tying her for the third-most appearances in Saint Francis history in a single season.
For the season, Trahan went 15-4 in the circle with a 2.45 ERA. She accumulated a total of 128.2 innings pitched, allowed 97 hits, 56 runs, 45 earned runs, issued 27 walks and recorded 103 strikeouts.
In NEC play, Trahan posted an unblemished 3-0 record accompanied by a 0.31 ERA over the span of eight appearances. She tallied 22.2 innings pitched, surrendered just three runs (one earned) on eight hits and four walks while striking out 34 of the 76 batters that she faced.
Trahan threw the first no-hitter of her collegiate career against Cleveland State on February 19, 2017. She threw all six innings, recorded five strikeouts and finished the game just one error shy of a perfect game.
Trahan proved to be a reliable arm for the Red Flash in the postseason as she threw 3.1 innings and struck out four in Saint Francis' first game of the NEC Tournament against Robert Morris University.
She then went on to pitch all seven innings against South Carolina in Saint Francis' NCAA Regional matchup against the Gamecocks.
Trahan will look to continue her success as she is expected to play a major role in the circle for the Golden Eagles in 2019. Her veteran presence and Division I experience will be a welcomed addition to Southern Miss' pitching staff.
Southern Miss head softball coach Wendy Hogue on Trahan being selected to Softball America's College Top 100 list
"Abby is a confident competitor with a very impressive resume. Although she is new to C-USA, she is no stranger to what it takes to win at this level. She is a crucial part of our pitching staff here at Southern Miss. Each day she brings a desire to win and a level of focus and energy that not only makes her better, but makes our team better as well. I am beyond proud of her for earning this preseason honor."
Southern Miss will open the 2019 season on Friday, February 8 against Houston Baptist at 1:00 p.m. (CT) in game one of the Black and Gold Invitational at the Southern Miss Softball Complex in Hattiesburg, Miss. The Golden Eagles will return to action Friday night in their second game of the day where they will face Central Arkansas at 6:00 p.m. (CT).
