HATTIESBURG, Miss. – After an outstanding performance in Waco over the course of the weekend, Southern Miss junior shortstop Lacey Sumerlin has been named to the Getterman Classic All-Tournament Team.
The Southern Miss softball team took part in the Getterman Classic hosted by Baylor University this past weekend along with UT Arlington and Sam Houston State.
Sumerlin led the way for the Golden Eagles, notching a home run, 4 RBI and a .692 slugging percentage over the span of Southern Miss' five games played in the Getterman Classic.
The Mobile, Ala. native found herself in several big spots over the weekend and she answered when her number was called.
Sumerlin's first RBI of the weekend came in Southern Miss' 5-3 victory over UT Arlington on Friday night when she roped a double to right center, scoring Caroline Casey to give the Golden Eagles a 3-1 lead.
Sumerlin capitalized on her biggest opportunity of the weekend when she strolled to the plate in the bottom of the sixth inning of Southern Miss' Saturday morning matchup against Sam Houston State with the game tied 1-1 and blasted a towering solo home run deep over the left field wall, which ultimately led to a 2-1 Southern Miss victory.
The sixth inning home run against Sam Houston State also marked the first of Sumerlin's Southern Miss career.
The junior added two more RBI to her total in the Golden Eagles nightcap against Sam Houston State on Saturday after lacing a ringing two-run single down the left field line with two outs in the inning, tying the game 2-2.
In addition, Sumerlin batted .385 (5-for-13), with 2 R, 2 BB and a .467 on-base percentage.
Sumerlin on being named to the Getterman Classic All-Tournament Team
"I was excited to see that I made the Getterman Classic All-Tournament Team, but I felt that we had so many players with outstanding performances that deserved it as well. I can't wait to take on this next week with this amazing team and continue to grow and show everyone what we are made of. A solo performance will never come close to what this team can do when we play together and I am thankful for another opportunity for us to get out there and do that this week!"
Southern Miss will return to action on Wednesday, February 20 when they host in-state SWAC opponent Alcorn State in a doubleheader beginning at 5:00 p.m. (CT) at the Southern Miss Softball Complex.
