PARADISE ISLAND, Bahamas -- Southern Miss kept within 11 at the seven-minute mark in the game, but No. 13 Seton Hall finished on a 17-3 run to win 81-56 on Thanksgiving Night.
"I thought our guys competed hard," head coach Jay Ladner said. "Our margin of error is so small. At times we were overwhelmed with size and so forth, but you have to credit them. They are a good team and are well-coached. I was proud of our team's effort. I don't think the final score was indicative of how hard-fought a game it was. It's a work in progress, especially for such a young team, but we have to keep the goal in mind that we are preparing for league play."
The Golden Eagles (2-5) will close out the Battle 4 Atlantis on Friday night against Alabama. Tip-off will be at 8:30 p.m. CT on either ESPN2, U or News.
The Pirates were tabbed to win the BIG EAST this season, and held a 40-31 lead at the half. They also held a 12-for-15 free-throw clip while the Golden Eagles were held without one for the period. Southern Miss fell behind 20-11 but fought to within 26-24, which included holding the Pirates to a five-minute field goal drought.
Gabe Watson finished with a game-high 18 points, including a breakaway steal and one-handed dunk with a foul with eight minutes left. LaDavius Draine continued his hot tournament with 14 points, including going 4-for-7 from deep. This weekend, he is 9-for-16 from beyond the arc.
Seton Hall (5-2) was led by Preseason All-American Myles Powell and his 18 points. Walk-on David McCoy guarded him throughout various parts of the first and second half as well, limiting him to 2-for-9 shooting from deep.
"We did a better job at executing tonight," Ladner said. "The better team won, but we can walk away with our heads up."
