HATTIESBURG, Miss. – It is a series that dates back 65 years, but one that has seen these two schools meet just 13 times, including in each of the last six seasons as members of Conference USA.
Southern Miss and North Texas played sparingly over the formative years of its rivalry, including once in the 2004 New Orleans Bowl, but now they play each other every year by having become rivals in the league's West Division.
The overall series shows the Mean Green possessing a 7-6 advantage, which includes winning the last three meetings. Last year's game saw North Texas capture a 30-7 victory, with the Mean Green breaking open a 10-7 lead in the final minute of the third quarter with running back DeAndre Torrey collecting three rushing touchdowns down the stretch to pull away in the contest.
This year's matchup, set for 6 p.m., this Saturday at M.M. Roberts Stadium, has the two schools meeting for the fourth time for the Golden Eagles' homecoming.
Southern Miss holds a 1-2 record against the Mean Green on its homecoming dating, winning the first matchup 26-0 in 1955, before dropping the next two meetings 27-14 in 1977 and 55-14 in 2013.
Overall for homecoming, the Golden Eagles hold a 60-22 record all-time, having won 14 of their last 18, including four-straight victories that includes a 27-17 win over UTSA last season.
For the North Texas series, it dates back to a 15-7 Mean Green victory on Oct. 2, 1954. Every game except for that New Orleans Bowl contest have been played on each school's respective campus and the Golden Eagles are 3-3 against North Texas in Hattiesburg.
Now, Southern Miss puts a current seven-game home winning streak on the line against a Mean Green squad that enters the weekend with a 2-3 overall record and a 1-0 mark in league play.
