HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- Southern Miss redshirt-junior forward Leonard Harper-Baker has earned Conference USA Player of the Week honors for his recent performance.
The Detroit native continued to prove himself as one of the most valuable newcomers in C-USA, averaging 16.5 points and 14.5 rebounds for Southern Miss against WKU and Marshall. The last Golden Eagle to have 29 or more rebounds over two games was Charles Gaines in Feb. 2004. Harper-Baker's outburst also came on the heels of a 14-rebound performance at ODU on Saturday.Â
Harper-Baker (18 points, 15 rebounds versus WKU and 15 points, 14 rebounds versus Marshall) is the first Golden Eagle with consecutive double-doubles since teammate Cortez Edwards from Jan. 18-20, 2018. He also has two others from the wins over South Alabama and UAB. The Marshall win stands as both Golden Eagles' largest-ever against a Division I foe and widest margin ever between C-USA teams (excluding vacated wins). It also marked the Herd's fewest points since March 5, 2015.Â
Harper-Baker's 9.7 rebounds per game ranks third in C-USA play, and his seven field goals in each of this weekend's games were new career-highs. He is the first Golden Eagle to earn the league's weekly honor since Quinton Campbell on Feb. 27, 2017.
Southern Miss (12-9, 4-5 C-USA) will fly to the Sunshine State this week to play FIU on Thursday and Florida Atlantic on Saturday.
