The Greatest Game in the Series – Marshall

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – This week's greatest game of the series deals with the Marshall Thundering Herd, a game that has been played each year since the 2005 campaign.
In fact, the initial game of the series that took place in Huntington, W.Va., and came down to a game-winning field goal in overtime.
Darren McCaleb booted a 34-yarder in overtime to give Southern Miss the 27-24 overtime victory, as the Golden Eagles withstood a late Thundering Herd rally.
Running back Larry Thomas paced the Golden Eagles' offensive attack with a team-high 118 yards on 25 carries with a touchdown, while Cole Mason added six carries for 24 yards and a touchdown.
Dustin Almond finished the game with 224 yards on 17-of-28 passing with one touchdown and one interception. Anthony Perine led the team with 77 yards on six catches, while Chris Johnson had 45 yards on two catches. Pedi Causey had the lone touchdown, a 58-yarder.
Southern Miss took its opening possession 80 yards in 15 plays, which resulted in a three-yard touchdown run by Thomas, his fourth of the season, taking a 7-0 lead with 7:28 to play in the first quarter. He has now scored a touchdown in two consecutive games.
The Golden Eagles made the score 10-0 on a 40-yard field goal by McCaleb, which was set up by Brandon Sumrall's team-best third interception of the season. With the field goal, McCaleb had scored 218 points in his career, moving into second place all-time in scoring, only behind Sammy Winder's total of 234 he set from 1978-81.
In the second quarter, Marshall made the score 10-7 with 7:23 to play before halftime, as Bernie Morris found Hiram Moore for a 10-yard touchdown.
Southern Miss then re-established its 10-point lead, as Almond found Causey for a 58-yard touchdown, the first of his career.
Marshall made the score 17-10 in the third quarter, on a 22-yard field goal by David Defatta.
The Golden Eagles then made the score 24-10 on a two-yard touchdown run by Mason, the first of his career.
Marshall got closer on a 10-yard pass from Jimmy Skinner to Shawn Lauzon, before tying the game with 8:32 to play on a one-yard touchdown run by Ahmad Bradshaw at 24-24.
The Thundering Herd had a chance to win the game in regulation, but Jasper Faulk blocked the field goal attempt by Defatta, sending the game into overtime.
In the overtime session, Marshall's Defatta saw his field goal attempt hit the goal post, before McCaleb's 34-yarder gave Southern Miss the victory.
The two teams resume the series this year, with the Golden Eagles leading 7-6 all-time between the schools, on Saturday, Nov. 3, at M.M. Roberts Stadium. Game time is 2 p.m., CT and can be seen on Stadium on Facebook.
