Football Opens C-USA Play This Weekend against Rice at The Rock

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Conference USA play begins this weekend for the Southern Miss football team.
The Golden Eagles should be rested after having last weekend's non-conference game at Appalachian State canceled due to Hurricane Florence. Southern Miss takes on Rice at Carlisle-Faulkner Field at M.M. Roberts Stadium this Saturday at 6 p.m. The game will be shown on ESPN+ as well as be heard on one of the affiliates on the Southern Miss IMG Sports Network.
Southern Miss gets to play its third-straight home game to start the season when they meet the Owls (1-2) and used the de facto open week getting ready to begin league play while correcting all the mistakes, big and small, from the 21-20 loss to ULM.
"We're just trying to work on doing all the little things to the best of our ability," said third-year coach Jay Hopson. "The journey as a football coach is that we just want to be better every week. We've got some guys that have playmaking ability and I feel like we're doing some good things. One thing you can't do and win football games is you can't turn the ball over. You can't not execute on high levels and win football games."
The Golden Eagles, which hold a 102-63 mark all-time in C-USA contest, have opened league play 15 times over 22 seasons with a victory. Southern Miss has won five league titles.
The Owls, who were also idle last week, bring a talented squad to The Rock this weekend. Southern Miss, though, has won three-straight games in the series as both teams have won four times over the first eight games that the two schools have played.
"They use a lot of different looks, a lot of different personnel groupings and they're a football team that is well coached. Offensively and defensively, they are a football team that has our utmost respect and we know it's going to be a four-quarter game."
Tickets for Saturday game remain available by going online at SouthernMissTickets.com, by calling 1-800-844-TICK (8425) or by visiting the Pat Ferlise Center from 8 a.m.-5 p.m., weekdays.
