HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- Southern Miss softball's head coach Wendy Hogue announced three transfer signees Tuesday afternoon.Â
"I cannot tell you how excited we are about the addition of these three talented transfers, said Hogue. "They all add leadership and quality experience to our young team."
Lacey Sumerlin was the first of the three transfers and is coming from the University of Georgia. The Mobile native spent two years with the Bulldogs and saw action in 121 games with 120 starts; primarily as a shortstop but has spent quality time at first base as well. In the 2016 season she earned SEC All-Freshman honors behind 36 hits, 22 RBI, 23 runs and drew 19 walks. During the 2017 season, Sumerlin notched a .282 batting average with 42 hits, 35 RBI, 27 runs scored and a team high 39 walks. In high school, she was named the 2015 Gatorade Player of the Year for her native state of Alabama.Â
"When Lacey [Sumerlin] committed this past spring, we knew she possessed the ability to make an immediate impact upon arrival this fall," Hogue said. "She did some great things during her time at Georgia and is anxious to continue those efforts here."
Bailie Springfield is joining the family after spending the past season at Itawamba Community College. The right-handed pitcher earned MACJC Pitcher of the Year honors after a 20-5 record for the No. 3 Indians. The Maben, Miss. native, posted a 1.54 ERA with 123 strikeouts and seven shutouts over the year, the 20 wins set a program, single-season record. She was named MACJC Pitcher of the Week on three occasions and NJCAA Pitcher of the Week twice. Most recently named an NFCA, NJCCA and Fastpitch News All-American while also being a member of both the NJCCA and NFCA All-Region Team. Prior to Itawamba, Springfield spent one season with Delta State.Â
"Bailie [Springfield] is a player who adds experience to our young pitching staff," continued Hogue. "She's a workhorse in the circle and adds depth in the infield and at the plate. She swings it well and had 16 extra base hits, during her All-American campaign at ICC."
Abby Trahan comes to Hattiesburg after a two year stint at Saint Francis University. The right-handed pitcher saw First Team All-Conference, Conference Pitcher of the Year and Second Team All-Region honors during her 2018 season where she posted a 2.55 ERA in 255 innings of work while striking out 186 batters notching a 28-15 record. Her 28 wins was good for ninth in the NCAA. In 39 starts she collected 29 complete games. In 2017, the Kaplan, La. native, was named the Northeast Conference Rookie of the Year and Third Team All-Region while sporting a 15-4 record and a 2.45 ERA with 130 innings of work behind 103 strikeouts.Â
"After losing three senior pitchers, it was imperative we add some Division I experience to the staff," Hogue said. "With almost 400 innings and 43 wins over her two years, she certainly meets and exceeds expectations."Â
The three will join seven freshman and 12 returners for the 2019 season.
