Parker Shaunfield Exceeding Expectations from Preseason Accolades

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – It is a tremendous honor to earn selection for a prestigious accolade prior to a football season. That award can also present pressure on the individual that receives it.
For Southern Miss redshirt senior placekicker Parker Shaunfield (Aledo, Texas) shows no sign of that pressure after the Conference USA coaches picked him as the preseason Conference USA Special Teams Player of the Year.
How has Shaunfield responded with that acknowledgment?
Well, he has converted all 14 of his extra points and eight-of-10 field goal attempts, including six-of-eight from 40 yards or longer.
In fact, he tied his career-high field goal of 51 yards in front of over 80,000 during the early goings at Jordan-Hare Stadium last weekend at Auburn.
But how did Shaunfield get to this point where he was voted as the league's top special teams player heading into the season.
Well, Shaunfield started his career with a school-record streak of 87 consecutive extra points made and also converted 118-of-120 for his career.
Last season, he hit 17 of his 20 field goals, including a career-best 15 in a row at one point. His most memorable game of the season came in an overtime road win at Louisiana Tech on Oct. 21, hitting a career-best four field goals in four tries, including a 49-yarder with 1:23 left in regulation.
It was the first four-field goal contest by a Golden Eagle since Oct. 17, 2015. Shaunfield also belted a career-long of 51 yards at the end of the first half at Rice (Nov. 11) and was No. 5 in the conference in field goals per game (1.31). Last year, he became the first Golden Eagle specialist on the All-Conference USA team since Corey Acosta in 2014.
For his career, Shaunfield ranks third at the school in kick scoring (235), extra points made and attempts, and fifth in field goals made (39).
Golden Eagle fans will get another look at Shaunfield and the rest of the Golden Eagles when they return to action at North Texas next Saturday, Oct. 13, in a 1 p.m. contest. Southern Miss returns home the following week, Oct. 20, for homecoming when they take on UTSA in a 6 p.m., game.
Tickets for that game can be purchased by going online at SouthernMissTickets.com, by calling 1-800-844-TICK (8425) or visiting the Pat Ferlise Ticket Office weekdays from 8 a.m. - 5 p.m.
