Trivenskey Mosley Stepping Up for Southern Miss in the Running Game

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – With half of his first season still ahead of him, the case for being in the same conversation as Derrick Nix, Damion Fletcher and Vincent Alexander as an all-time great true freshmen Southern Miss running back can still be made for Trivenskey Mosley.
The Shreveport, La., product, who has seen action in five of the Golden Eagles' first six games, enjoyed his breakout moment last Saturday versus UTSA when he rushed for 142 yards on 26 carries and helped lead the squad to a season-high 218 yards rushing as a squad.
His ground output versus the Roadrunners represents the ninth-best rushing performance by a Golden Eagle true freshman and 11th-most ever by a Southern Miss freshman with the top eight spots occupied by the names mentioned above.
Along with redshirt freshman Steven Anderson, third-year coach Jay Hopson has been impressed by the play during the early going of both of his freshman running backs.
"They both have different qualities, which is a good thing," said Hopson. "In the running back room, you want guys that are kind of different tempos. Trivenskey is certainly an explosive back with great vision and Steven is that guy that is your prototypical big back.
"It's good to have that one, two punch. We need those two guys to continue on."
For the season, Mosley leads the Golden Eagle running back group with 331 yards on 62 carries. His previous rushing-best output prior to Saturday the previous week with 73 ground yards on 11 attempts.
For Mosley, news on his first career start did not come until late last week and he knew he had to be ready to step up for his team.
"When our senior running back Tez Parks hurt his ankle, I probably got the news about Wednesday or Thursday that he wouldn't be able to go," said Mosley right after his big game. "I had to get my mind prepared for tonight."
Mosley and the Golden Eagles now take their improved running game to Charlotte this weekend and will have their work cut out for them. The 49ers rank No. 6 nationally in rushing defense, giving up just 84.1 yards per game.
Kickoff for the C-USA contest takes place at 1 p.m., CT from Jerry Richardson Stadium in Charlotte. The game can be seen on ESPN3 as well as be heard on an affiliate of the Southern Miss IMG Sports Network.
