HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- Southern Miss football coach Jay Hopson held his weekly news conference at the Duff Athletic Center, Monday, as the Golden Eagles get ready to travel this Saturday to Charlotte for a Conference USA tilt.
The Golden Eagles and 49ers play at 1 p.m. CT at Jerry Richardson Stadium. The game can be viewed on ESPN3, as well as be heard on one of the affiliates of the Southern Miss IMG Sports Network.
Here are some of things Hopson said during his news conference:
Opening Statement:
"Good win Saturday. I certainly felt like we did some good things. Again, offensively, We did a better job of running the ball. I felt like we threw the ball well. We moved the ball well during the first half. We got into some minus yardage situations in the second half, and we had some turnovers, so we certainly have some things we want to correct there. Defensively, other than a few plays, we played assignment football with discipline and played aggressive. It was a good win. It was a C-USA win. It's always a hard fought battle in C-USA and this upcoming week is no exception."
Â
On the running game:
"We have the skill level in the running back area to be able to turn it into one of our strengths. We certainly want to get better, that's our journey each week. We want to always be able to go in and run the ball. That's who we have always been. Our offensive line did a good job Saturday and Trivenskey (Mosley) and Steven (Anderson) ran the ball really well. Again, we have good backs and we have good linemen. We have created some competition up front and that's what football is all about, competing. We just want to get better this week and we want to be better than we were last week."
Â
On the competition:
"Sometimes in football and coaching you do that. You have to give guys opportunities and I thought (offensive lineman) Bryce (Foxworth) did a good job when he got in there and (offensive lineman) Paul (Gainer, Jr.) had some good plays. The bottom line is that those guys did a good job and they earned that opportunity to get on the field. It wasn't given to them, they have been competing hard in practice and guys earn rights to get their chance. When they got their opportunity they did a good job with it."
Â
On the combination running of Trivenskey Mosley and Steven Anderson:
"They both have different qualities, which is a good thing. In the running back room, you want guys that are kind of different tempos. Trivenskey is certainly an explosive back with great vision and Steven is that guy that is your prototypical big back. (Steven) runs hard and low, and has great athleticism. It's good to have that one, two punch. We need those two guys to continue on. It was a good game but we want our running game, our passing game, our gap integrity; everything to be better. That's my big journey. I want to see us get better every week."
Â
On what he has seen from Charlotte:
"Charlotte is a good football team. Again, I'm a worn out record, another good football team. They are a team that plays hard on both sides of the ball, offensively and defensively. Again, you have to prepare hard for them. They give you a lot of looks and they are a football team that has our utmost respect."
Â
On how the defense is playing:
"Each game is a different journey. Our defense played hard Saturday. They played with emotion. They did a good job. I felt like the week before at North Texas, we played well outside of the fourth quarter. Those guys come to play, but we have to continue that to be successful. Our football team understands that we are on a journey to be better every week. That is what we have to do to be successful."
Â
On health updates of both Jaylond Adams and Tez Parks:
"We will see this week. They should be running tonight so we will see how they are."
Â
On Kwadra Griggs:
"He should be back."
