HATTIESBURG, Miss. – After playing in consecutive seasons in San Antonio, the football series returns to The Rock this weekend when Southern Miss plays host to UTSA in the school's annual homecoming contest. Game time is set for 6 p.m.
The Golden Eagles (2-3 overall, 1-1 C-USA) look to snap a current two-game losing streak, after dropping a 30-7 affair at North Texas last weekend. The Roadrunners (3-4, 2-1) had a three-game winning streak snapped last weekend in a 31-3 home loss to Louisiana Tech.
The game can be viewed through ESPN+ as well as heard on one of the affiliates of the Southern Miss IMG Sports Network.
For third-year coach Jay Hopson, every week in conference play is a tough battle. Former Golden Eagle assistant coach Frank Wilson, who is in his third year leading the Roadrunners, comes into a Hattiesburg with a talented bunch.
"They're pretty versatile," said Hopson. "They have a lot of personnel groupings offensively, a lot of different formations defensively and they're very aggressive. It's a football team that makes you work."
Despite allowing 30 points in last week's contest at North Texas, the Golden Eagles held the league's top passer, Mason Fine, to 292 passing yards and continues to rank No. 20 nationally in total defense at 322.6 yards per contest. The 30 points was the most allowed by the team this season.
On offense, the Golden Eagles continue to be led by Jack Abraham, who has thrown for 1,581 yards and 12 touchdowns with only six interceptions. His top target is sophomore wide receiver Quez Watkins, who has team highs of 36 catches and 461 receiving yards to go along with seven touchdown receptions – including at least one in each game this season.
This is a role that Hopson said earlier this week that Watkins needs to fill for the Golden Eagle offense.
"Quez has to be the big play guy, he has that ability," said Hopson. "Quez is a talented guy that our offense needs to make big plays. We have a lot of receivers that can do things."
Tickets for the game remain available by going online at SouthernMissTickets.com, by calling 1-800-844-TICK (8425) or by visiting the Pat Ferlise Ticket Office from 8 a.m.-until 5 p.m., weekdays.
