Softball Hosts Single Game Against Mississippi State

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss softball team hosts a single game against Mississippi State on Tuesday at the Southern Miss Softball Complex. The Golden Eagles and Bulldogs take the field at 6:00 p.m. First 200 fans in attendance will receive a gold t-shirt and pom pom.
The Golden Eagles (16-15) enter the contest after a successful week, going 3-1, with wins against South Alabama and UTEP.
The Bulldogs enter the midweek tilt with a 24-9 overall record. State enters the game after winning two out of three game in the College Preview Tournament with wins against Louisiana Tech (5-4) and UAB (8-0).
Offensively, the Golden Eagle have a collective .244 batting average. Samantha Reynolds leads the team with a .381 average. Lauren Holifield leads the team with 29 hits, just ahead of Tori Dew who has 21. Chase Nelson and Jade Lewis both have 19 hits to round out the top four. The four have combined for 13 doubles and nine home runs. Holifield leads the team with 21 runs batted in, while Dew and Bailey Stokes are tied in second with 12. Holifield is also leading the teams in runs scored with 17.
In the circle, Southern Miss has a 2.53 team earned run average. The team's top three pitchers have split time with Kim Crowson tossing a team-high 81 2/3 innings, Jillian Johnson with 68.0, and Samantha Robles pitching 50 2/3. The Golden Eagles have struck out 93 batters this season, Crowson leads the team with 41 Ks.
Mississippi State holds a 34-13 advantage in the all-time series. The two teams played at least one game against each other each year from 1983-86 and 1999-16 with the exception of 2013 and 2014.

Scouting the Opposition:
Last week Mississippi State dropped a single game to SEC rival Ole Miss (2-0). In the College Preview Tournament, the Bulldogs beat the Lady Techsters 5-4 before dropping a game to the Sooners of OU, 3-5. The team closed the weekend out with a six-inning run rule against the Blazers of UAB, 8-0. Mississippi State is currently receiving votes in the ESPN.com/USA and USA Today/NFCA Coaches poll.
