Southern Miss Softball Opens Conference Play At UAB

HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- Southern Miss softball travels to Birmingham, Ala. to open Conference USA play against conference rival, UAB. The Golden Eagles open the three-game series with a doubleheader on Saturday slated to start at 1 p.m. with the second game immediately following its conclusion. The series will conclude with a single game on Sunday at 1 p.m.
Southern Miss enters the weekend 11-8 overall, while UAB is 8-14 overall, neither team has played a league game yet. The Golden Eagles are entering the weekend looking to bounce back from a 1-0 fall to North Carolina A&T earlier in the week. The Blazers are coming off a 2-3 record in the Bailey Memorial Tournament with losses to UNC Greensboro (x2) and Kennesaw State.
Live stats and in-game tweets (@SouthernMissSB) will be available throughout the weekend. In addition, Josh West will be broadcasting the Sunday game on 1400 AM for the local Hattiesburg area.
The Blazers hold a 32-25 (.561) advantage in the all-time series with the Golden Eagles dating back to the 2000 season. The two teams met a total of five times during the 2016 season with Southern Miss going 1-4.
Last season vs. UAB:
Southern Miss split the doubleheader with the Blazers in Hattiesburg during regular season conference play. In game one, the Golden Eagles posted a 6-3 victory, but dropped the nightcap game in a 7-1 decision. The team tallied 14 hits and Tori Dew, Bailey Stokes, Rachel Johnson, Lauren Holifield and Samantha Reynolds all recorded runs on the day with the majority of those hits coming in the first game.
During the conference tournament the two teams met in the quarterfinals with UAB taking the win 3-0 to advance to semi-finals. Southern Miss clinched a semi-final berth with a victory over Louisiana Tech, just to meet UAB again. In the semi-finals, the Blazers took the 5-1 victory to move on in the tournament.
