IRVING, Texas -- Conference USA announced Monday that Southern Miss redshirt-senior guard/forward Quinton Campbell is its Men's Basketball Player of the Week. It marks his first time earning the award.
Campbell, a native of Wilmer, Ala., was electric for the Golden Eagles as he averaged a double-double and nearly led his team to a road sweep of Rice and North Texas. He scored 18 points on Thursday as Southern Miss rallied from a 52-34 deficit with 13 minutes to play and went in to overtime, playing 39 minutes in that marathon. The Golden Eagles fell just short, but it truly motivated him even more on Saturday, spoiling North Texas' Senior Day by scoring his team's first 11 points en route to a 24-point, 13-rebound game.
The latter tied a career-high as did his 10 field goals. The 76-53 win was Southern Miss' largest margin of victory on the road in the Doc Sadler era and put Southern Miss in the C-USA Tournament for the first time since its two-year postseason ban.
Campbell is the first Golden Eagle to win the weekly award since Chip Armelin on Jan. 5, 2015.
